gotta name ‘em all

So how many games can you name? I got about 32/40 without outside assistance, but there are a couple of toughies in there unless you’ve played classic games on various systems - and know what name one PC version of Bomberman was released under.

real-world, real-time

Pouet is filled with crap these days, but this thread on real-world objects you’ve seen in demos is pretty good.

timewarp

Look what Mondo dug up! The file itself is here. If you can’t read IFFs, here’s a PNG.

I remember doing this too. For some of the outline, I traced off the TV screen with a sheet of clear plastic and a marker, then followed the lines in Deluxe Paint IV. And the anti-aliasing is all done by hand. Ah, those were the days.

And I still can’t finish a damn demo.

no late fees

We’ve just signed up for both Netflix and Blockbuster Online. Each has a trial period which I intend to use to compare the two services, but so far Netflix is easily winning, without either service sending anything. The interface is just so much better - with Blockbuster’s site, I’m getting a lot of errors, and everytime I want to go back from a search, I get the old “POST form results again” message box.

Worse than that though, is that practically everything I added to my Blockbuster queue was unavailable, most being “short wait” (up to two weeks) but some being “long” (two to four weeks) or “very long” (over six weeks). I didn’t think I was getting anything either super-popular or obscure, but I thought I’d just try some random average movies too, like Tomb Raider or Resident Evil, and was surprised to see that neither of those was available now. Netflix hasn’t had one movie list as unavailable.

Netflix also has the nice feature of allowing other members of the household to have their own queue without having to have separate accounts. These extra logins can be set to a particular maturity level, but unfortunately most of the stuff Sam wants to get is unrated-but-still-fairly-appropriate anime, so I’ve taken the “PG-13″ block off for him.

Of course, we’ve yet to receive anything yet so I don’t know what sort of turnaround time each service has, but Netflix would have to be absolutely appalling for me to go with Blockbuster instead at this stage, even though Blockbuster is the cheaper option. It’s just not worth saving 3 bucks a month if they never have anything I want in stock.

validation

A new study finds that individuals with high working-memory capacity, which normally allows them to excel, crack under pressure and do worse on simple exams than when allowed to work with no constraints.

So this is why I totally blew that interview with LithTech.

pee ess pee

So the PSP release date has been announced.

March 24. $250. The gadgetlust is strong with this one - I mean look at it, it’s gorgeous - but I’ll pass.
