in memory

Sam and I watched the small Memorial Day parade here in town this morning. We didn’t have to go far, we live on the main street and they started right outside our house.

I didn’t know it was coming, so I was quite surprised to see the vintage WWII plane swoop down low, and it got me to wondering - surely the men there would rather not be reminded like that?

yorkshire’s republican army

I’ve not posted much about Leeds, but for a walk down a memory lane littered with broken windows and bloodied noses, check out this collection of pics and clippings.

it’s a me, eh?

Turns out there IS a reason for keeping Internet Explorer around, and it’s Yahooligans! TV.

A site that shows kids cartoons, big deal, right? Well what if I say it carries the Super Mario Bros Super Show and The Legend of Zelda? I thought you’d like that.

kilobyte me

That last entry took me to 1k. Not the pissy 1000 of mere mortals, but the one kilobyte of coders.

ouch

So Sam got me with an unintentional burn. Last week, I decided I wanted to stop being clean shaven, and started growing my facial hair, and last night I groomed it into a goatee (yeah, I know it’s not really a goatee, and a Van Dyke is a better description because of the moustache, but that usually doesn’t have both joined.. why is there no real name for this style of facial hair grooming?). I come out of the bathroom looking like this, and I’m greeted with:

“Hey cool dad, it’s like it’s 1998 again!”

knnnnnnock em down

I discovered a real gem of a game over my lunch break today. Bontago takes the idea of real-world building games like Jenga and makes it into a strategic battle for dominance with multiple players.

Of course, it’s set me to thinking about yet another game idea before I’ve gotten anywhere near finished my last one, *sigh*

close shave

So ummm.. yeah. We were 15 or so miles away from getting wiped out last night. I had no idea it was that close until Amy told me when she got home from work.

We’d had the power out a couple of times yesterday, once right in the middle of making supper. I had to totally MacGyver the fries, but I saved supper, damnit.

e3 is more than nice tits

It’s a shame I’ve not posted, because so much has happened recently in the game world. Why? E3, of course. It’s the time of year when I get jealous of everyone who gets to go, even though I know that those of us playing the home game are probably getting more information than the attendees these days. But still.. I’d love to be there, blagging drinks like any other trade show (hmm, I wonder if I’ll get to go to SIGGRAPH this year? There have been rumors..)

And what a show it was this year. Our household is becoming more and more a Nintendo fanboy zone, and they absolutely stole E3 from the competition this year. There are a handful of games I’m interested in for the Xbox (Fable, maybe Jade Empire, maybe DOA Ultimate, maybe Burnout 3), ditto for the PS2 (Katamari Damacy - “the junk ball game”, MGS3, FFXII). The PSP looks very sexy and very expensive. But Nintendo.. oh Nintendo, you’ve emptied my wallet already. If the DS is ~$150 and doesn’t have any serious flaws, I think it’ll be in this house this year, together with several of the announced games (New Super Mario Bros!). For the consoles we already have, there’s Donkey Konga, Jungle Beat, Paper Mario 2, Odama (that weird RTS-cum-pinball game), Mario Tennis, Zelda.. and on the GBA there are things like Mario vs Donkey Kong, Zelda - The Minish Cap, DK King of Swing, and Mario Pinball (although I think a DS version might be better..)

This isn’t even counting the quality games we don’t yet have on our Nintendo systems, and there are dozens of those. Or 2nd- and 3rd-party games like Viewtiful Joe 2.

Cash injection plzkthxbye.

update

Once again, I’m shamed by the empty space left here by over a week of no posting. And once again, I have the legitimate reason “I’ve been so busy”. With normal people, that generally means that they spend so much time working on the computer that they just want to get away from the machine in their offtime, but I’m not like that. I spend even more time on it, but I just sort of zone out and don’t do anything. I guess I just burn out.

Hopefully I can recharge a bit this weekend, as I’m forced to leave my desk and go to a couple of graduation ceremonies. Maybe it’s a blessing in disguise.
