I’d better make this post before too much time has passed and I forget most of it.. Here it is, my rundown of SIGGRAPH 2001, in the time-tested Cheers/Jeers format:
Cheers - finally meeting a large number of people that I have known from IRC for many years, and finding out that everyone presents themselves honestly online
Jeers - only being able to spend a few minutes talking to (shouting at) Jude
Cheers - staying in the seen-in-many-movies Westin Bonaventure
Jeers - the pretty crappy rooms of said Bonaventure
Cheers - Cap’n Lee’s Seafood on the 4th floor of the hotel. It is the only place outside of the UK I’ve ever had decent fish n chips.
Cheers - Newtek put on a good show as always, and Lightwave 7 was probably the biggest surprise of the event. The reason I mention them is that I was stationed right next to their booth.
Jeers - Because I was right next to their booth, I was aurrally assaulted by their every-five-minute playing of some music video done in Lightwave. At least I got to see Invader Zim once a day though.
Jeers - Shutting off our 3D printer before Arnold’s alien heads were done. They looked real nice, even without faces.
Cheers - Thanks to Peter Plantec and his family for the party, and getting to chat with Paul Debevec.
Jeers - not having a laptop
Jeers - not having a digital camera
Jeers - not being able to get a Pixar poster
Jeers - not being able to get an ILM t-shirt
Cheers - Jason’s anecdote about the origins of the British two-fingered “fuck off” salute. On a separate note, I wonder if he knows about the amount of Marcus Cole slash out there? And man, I can’t believe I missed my chance to ask someone if they were aware of the amount of slash written about them. Man.
Jeers - I still owe Mark 10 bucks for lunch. Sorry dude.
Cheers - to a pretty varied Electronic Theater. I now hold a greater appreciation for 102 Dalmations, knowing that Oddball is completely CG! And we don’t care what you say Arnold, Pipe Dream kicked ass.
Jeers - It might just be me, but there didn’t seem to be that many groundbreaking papers this year, with Henrik Wann Jensen’s subsurface scattering being the exception.
Jeers - [censored] didn’t exactly treat us well. Is it my fault your machines die and your tech has to be fixing shit 5 minutes before the doors open? No.
Jeers - the bill in the Formosa cafe. And the lack of light. And the food wasn’t that good. But hey! It’s HOLLYWOOD! And Amy, Guns ‘N Roses!
Cheers - to an overall fun experience, which I hope to repeat next year in my new home state of Texas.
That’s about all I can do. If I think of any more, I’ll post it.
