Okay, so we’re like a bit behind in posts and stuff.
Let’s get the move out of the way, in a vastly abridged version. The plan was simple; rent a U-Haul, fly in Amy’s father (Fred) to drive it up to Washington, hire some day labourers to move, Amy and Fred drive up there Friday afternoon after Thanksgiving, Sam and I stay overnight in CA then fly up on Saturday evening.
Amy planned it perfectly. She did a great job of coordinating everything, getting things shut off in CA, things turned on in WA, etc. This is what went wrong:
1. The U-Haul was not there on Friday morning. It didn’t show up until about 4pm, 2 hours after they were supposed to leave.
2. The day worker center was closed (even though we had assurances that it would be open on that particular day), and we had to load everything ourselves. Now before anyone thinks we’re whining, we had a couple of couches to move, and we lived on the 3rd floor. This was going to be bad, because..
3. Fred has a bad back. Even though we did everything in our power to stop him, he insisted on helping to move the couches. Then he wisely decided to rest, picked up a light box, and BOOM. His back went out. Can’t move. Apart from his obvious pain, we were left with 2 new problems:
4. How do we get our stuff to WA?
5. How does Fred get back home to Iowa? He HAS to be there by Monday morning.
6. When Sam and I arrive in WA, what are we going to do? We don’t have a key to our new place, and we can’t get one until Sunday morning. It is now too late for Fred and Amy to get there in time and get the key before the office closed, even if Fred was in a state to drive.
So we loaded up the rest of our stuff into the U-Haul anyway (I mean, we had to be out of the apartment by Monday, even if we didn’t know how we’d get it to WA) and bedded down on the floor for the night, hoping that a solution would appear.
Well, appear it did, as Fred improved enough to drive on the Saturday. I was honestly surprised at this. Amy reserves a motel room in WA for Sam and I for Saturday night, as they would arrive Sunday morning. So we rush to get everything cleaned up in the apartment, get the car trailer hitched to the U-Haul, and Sam and I leave for the airport at about 2pm. Fred and Amy set off about 30 mins later.
From there, it was fairly smooth. Our flight (on an Alaska Air DC-10.. *shudder*) was fine, we survived SeaTac airport (I have a story to tell about that place one day), Fred and Amy arrived in one piece, and we got into our new house. We love it here so far.
Even if it did piss it down with rain all day when we had to unload the truck.
